Jewniton: What are those shop selling,Mr Li?
Li Hua: You mean the mooncackes?
Jewniton: What is a mooncacke?
Li Hua: Ah,it is a kind of food with distinctive Chinese features.We have the
Mid-autumn Festival on the 15th of August in the Chinese lunar calendar.
It is a tradition for Chinese people to eat moon cakes during this festival.
Jewniton: So I am lucky enough to have the chance to taste mooncakes!
Li Hua: Yes,and you can enjoy the sight of the brightest moon while you eat
mooncakes on that night.

2.The Double-ninth Festival
Li Hua: After we celebrate the Mid-autumn Festival,we have the
Double-ninth Festival.
Jewniton: What day is the “Double-ninth”?
Li Hua: It's on the 9th of September in the Chinese lunar calendar.
Jewniton: What's this festival set for?
Li Hua: It's the Elder People's Day of China.Respecting the old is
a fine tradition of the Chinese people.
Jewniton: That's great.We shall observe it.
Li Hua: Yes.And have a famous poem describing this festival.It goes
like this:
Alone as a guest on foreign aoil,
Twice homesick am I on every festival.
After I imagine my brothers're mountains climbing.
They,with dogwood spray in hand,find me missing.

李 华:中秋节之后,是重阳节。
祝尼通:“重阳节”是哪一天?
李 华:中国农历的九月初九。
祝尼通:重阳节是一个什么样的节日?
李 华:是中国的老人节。尊敬老人是中华民族的优良传统。
祝尼通:这很好,我们也应该学习。
李 华:是的。而且有一首著名的古诗就是描写重阳节的:
独在异乡为异客,
每逢佳节倍思亲。
遥知兄弟登高处,
遍插茱萸少一人。
3.The Spring Festival
Jewniton: Before I came to China,I know already that you have
the most important festival like Christmas.That is
the Spring Festival,right?
Li Hua: Yes.
Jewniton: How do you celebrate it?
Li Hua: Like your Christmas.But the difference between them
is that we usually have the celebration with the whole
family on the New Year's Eve.We set fireworks and eat
jiaozi.It is really a great fun.
Jewniton: It sounds exciting.I hope I can celebrate it here in China.

祝尼通:来中国之前,我就知道你们有一个很重要的节日,
像我们的圣诞节一样。它是春节,对吗?
李 华:是的。
祝尼通:你们怎么庆祝?
李 华:像你们的圣诞节一样。不过中国春节与圣诞节不同
的是:除夕之夜,全家人会聚在一起,吃饺子、放
鞭炮,非常热闹。
祝尼通:听起来真令人兴奋。我真想在中国过一次春节。
4.The Lantern Festival
Li Hua: We still have another important festival.That is "Yuanxiaojie".
Jewniton: When is it celebrated?
Li Hua: It is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month.
Jewniton: Why is it called "Yuanxiaojie"?
Li Hua: It is called "Yuanxiaojie",because it is the first round-moon night
in the year.On that day we eat sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice
flour.And each family hangs different kinds of lanterns on its gate.
Jewniton: That must be very beautiful.
Li Hua: Yes.Indeed.

李 华:我们还有一个重要的节日,就是元宵节。
祝尼通:元宵节是哪一天?
李 华:它是中国农历的正月十五。
祝尼通:为什么叫元宵节?
李 华:因为它是一年中第一个月圆之夜,在那一天人们都要吃用糯米做的
元宵,所以叫元宵节。而且家家户户都在门前挂灯笼。
祝尼通:那一定很漂亮。
李 华:是的,的确如此。
5.The Duanwu Festival
Jewniton: What is the Duanwu Festival?
Li Hua: The Duanwu Festival is also called the Dragon-boat Festival.It's on
the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
Jewniton: What do you celebrate this festival for?
Li Hua: It is the occasion to commemorate Qu Yuan,a great patriotic poet in
ancient China.
Jewniton: Why do you eat Zongzi?
Li Hua: People mourned Qu Yuan's death and every year they throw bamboo tubes
filled with rice into the river as a sacrifice offered to him.This is
supposed to be the beginning of the custom of rowing dragon boats and
eating Zongzi on the day of Duanwu.
Jewniton: Sounds great.
